BREATHTAKING! HANSEN ROBSJOHN GIBBINGS BAMBOO TABLE LAMP! EXQUISITE DETAILS! ( DIMENSIONS: APPROX. 27" TALL SHADE 16" WIDE ) This lamp is part of the 20th century "arts and crafts" movement! The "pencil reed" rattan had to be cut, soaked, shaped, glued and held in place as it dried! High end lamps from the post-war period were still made with the utmost care! It's a labor of love and art! Most craftsman wouldn't take on such a time-consuming and frustrating job today! But in this period, with less distractions, people created the most beautiful works of illumination art - such as this SUPERB brass and rattan lamp! This masterpiece hails from the late forties period of "oriental" themed accents. Bamboo as a "fine art" material after the world war now made its way to Western Art!The massive "cruise" liners, with their opulent "moderne" interiors, traveled the Pacific and favored these lamps in their interior decor during the forties! House & Garden magazine featured rattan and bamboo prominently all throughout the late forties along with new silk fabrics and a more relaxed "casual formal" living which these earthy materials embodied.It was simply the height of contemporary fashion and Robsjohn Gibbings managed to give these materials amazingly clean and 'upscale' designs! This lamp captures that moment in time perfectly! The base is thin and clean - and so cutting edge for 1949! The brass fittings are top notch and one can see that they haven't tarnished almost at all in over 70 years! The quality of this lamp is striking! The fit and treatment of the rattan is exceptional. Most lamps of this material show considerable age wear - whereas with this lamp it's like traveling in a time machine to the past! The shade is made of rice paper and flatters this beautiful piece with clean, bright light! A three way socket provides any amount of light desired! Excellent vintage condition! Unmarked.
