RAREST OF THE RARE! METROWAREWOOD TABLE LAMP CUSTOM GRAIN MATCHED WOOD! MANUFACTURER : METROWARE DATE: 1965 DIMENSIONS : 35" HIGH x 14" WIDE CONDITION: EXCELLENT! MetroWare started off in the Art Deco periodmaking lamps for the new "Art Deco" tastes! As time passedthey focused on wood, chalkware and plaster lamps for early"mid century modern" sensibilities! Their volumewas extremely low, by standards of the period.Often output would equal less than a hundred lamps a year.This number dwindled and the company folded by theearly seventies. Finding any MetroWare lamp today is nearlyimpossible. They just don't exist in enough numbers. At first glance, this MetroWare lamp appears as abeautiful wood lamp with a clean design. If one lookslonger & closer the details make one realize itis so much more! The wood used is grain matched from a singlewood source, sculpted, sanded and then lined upso as to create a visual harmony as one looksat the body of the lamp. This is the sortof thing the wood artisans at Crewe (and now Goodwood)were doing in Rolls Royce motorcars! You simply can't buy that sort of attention to detailand stylistic integrity in a table lamp these days! This is one of the last of MetroWare'sofferings. Considering the quality and timeput into the creation of each lamp, it is easyto see how they were out-produced and lostwhatever market share they had in the eraof mass production and industrialization.
