Younger 'moderns' got it and embraced the new, while previous generations thought it was just a license for artistic laziness or worse. Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti embraced cubism when he was younger and after the war started with his first, now iconic, "tall man" style sculptures. Giacometti had injured his foot and walked with a cane for awhile until forsaking it. This injury led many art historians to believe it set his subconscious in motion for the "walking man" and "falling man" series of sculptures. Giacometti wanted many variations of his works and when he liked a sculpture/subject he often did many versions of them, all with their own unique attributes. This sculpture appears to depict a nude young man. It is extremely similar in composition to the design of Giacometti's "Standing Nude" paintings and figurine sculptures from the 1946-1948 period.
