GOOD FORTUNE ! MID CENTURY CHINESE BOWL CARVED SOLID BRASS (Approx 11" Wide) Some people are special. This belief has sculpted the history of mankind and this bowl was made for a special person. In Chinese culture, the dragon has held a special significance. There was no higher compliment than to be compared to a dragon. The mighty Emperor was represented as a dragon and the dragon was used as a symbol of authority and power. The dragon has many mystical powers, including power and control over water and weather. Here, a brass bowl is hand carved by a Chinese artisan with the good fortune symbol, Fu, in the center of the bowl and two four clawed dragons around the edge. The flaming pearl floats between them signifying the owner of the bowl will be blessed with good fortune, wealth and prosperity. The four clawed dragons indicate this bowl was intended for a 'noble' person. A five clawed dragon was for the Emperor, four clawed were for nobles and people of auspicious talents, while three clawed dragons were for commoners. Chinese dragons have adorned furnishings since before written history. The full significance and origin of the dragon is not known at this time. Much of Chinese fortune revolves around the concept of positive energy or "qi". The attraction and manipulation of this energy is the goal of those seeking good fortune. The brass bowl is a gold hue and gold, like red, are considered lucky colors and good at channeling this positive energy or 'qi' into a household.
